tanzania! serengeti day two

These cloth flags were hung to attract bugs -- apparently black and blue are the colors to avoid in the great outdoors!

Ready for more Serengeti exploration

An impala (in Swahili, "swala," the name of our tour company)

Can you spot the croc?

The crocodile, opening his mouth to cool himself down

Hippos generally just floated about like this, giant blobs in the water... but don't worry, eventually we got one of them to smile for the camera

A hippo jaw

A bird hitches a ride with the migrating water buffalo

The buffalo were crossing the road right in front of our car

Two impala females showing their love

Can you spot the leopard?

Pride rock

Two zebras drinking, unawares...

(in British accent) "It's a lioness!"

Two lionesses, in the acacia bush, only about ten meters away from our car!

Do you see what the lionesses are interested in?

The first lioness starts coming out of the acacia bushes...

Extremely interested in the zebras, grazing unawares close by

Coming out of the bush and starting to stalk the zebras

Using our safari cars and a well-placed termite mound as cover... but luckily for the zebras, they realized the danger and bolted away just as the lioness attacked -- phew!

The other lioness voices her disapproval of a failed hunt

Love how they're both smiling for the camera

Incredible!

Deciding to take a walk...

...directly under our car. That is our door handle! We could have reached out and petted the top of this lioness's head. If we had wanted to die.

Strutting around by all the safari cars

Scanning the horizon

Time for a nap!

Lilac breasted rollas mating on a branch

Another beautiful shot of the symbol of Tanzania

Nick finally succumbs to the lure of my hat (it *does* help when it's sunny!)

Writing about our lioness adventure before our nightly four-course dinner
