tanzania! christmas in the crater

Nick had to say goodbye to his wildebeest skull... by Tanzania law, you can't take anything out of the country without proper papers

A wildebeest's last, valiant standoff... we saw the two hyenas run her to exhaustion and the race ended right by the road (of course), as we left Serengeti on our way to Ngorongoro Crater

In Ngorongoro Crater, a hippo finally gives us a smile ;-)

The best shot we got of a hippo -- still obscured by grass!

A male ostrich, immediately after we saw him do an entire mating dance, attract a female ostrich, and have his way with her. Yowza! (And yes, we have video.)

The Ngorongoro Crater used to be a large volcano, which erupted and collapsed, forming this crater... and the ash drifted across what is now the Serengeti (making the land very fertile with all the minerals). Also, it's known for its population of extremely endangered black rhinos -- it's estimated there are 20-something rhinos in this crater, and we saw THIRTEEN of them (an amazing number!) -- but too far away for any good pictures!

"Pole pole" (pronounced "pol-ay pol-ay") = slowly! Love the baboons on this sign

A great tire cover

Back at Bouganvillea Safari Lodge, we take advantage of the beautiful (yet cold) pool

Before Christmas dinner, on the veranda of our villa

Felix joined us for Christmas dinner, which made it even more special!

It's a Kili Christmas!
