Do you know how hard it is to have National Day rained out in the middle of the desert of the Gulf?Yet today we managed! Rain, rain, pouring down and thundering all day today. There were to be several parades (a "national" parade, a car parade, and a boat parade) as well as evening fireworks on the Corniche. Now even the call to prayer sounds a bit depressed, and everyone is bedraggled and staying at home.
Although judging from the scene last night as we took 45 minutes to get to the Sheraton through the clogged streets (see the following pics), I wouldn't be surprised if the Qataris don't let a little rain stop them from singing -- and dancing -- in it.*
Happy 38th day of Solidarity, Loyalty, and Honor, Qatar!
*Addendum: Right around 8 pm, I thought I heard another thunderclap -- but no, it was the fireworks! Up we ran to the second-level rooftop to see a fantastic display of pyrotechnics spread out across the Corniche. I didn't remember to bring my camera (or warm clothes!) so we'll just have to remember how it looked to peek above a neighboring building (under construction) at the blossoms of color lighting up the night. A crane in the front and bursts of light in the back -- this is Doha!
